Moving from
one grade to the next can very often be an exciting adventure
but it can also be stressful for both the new student and
parents/families. Having taught both grades at different points
in my career, I can well-understand the questions that both
sides may be having about the "Middle School Move."
Will I have more than 1 teacher? Is there still a snack? Is
there a recess? How much homework will I have? What supplies
will I need? Do I need to bring them the first day of school?
What are my Exploratory classes? Are there after-school
programs? Is there after-school help offered? What books will I
be reading in 5th grade?
In addition to these questions and their answers, I have included some very
informative and helpful links to help with this transition.

Answers to Your Questions
Will I have more than 1 teacher?
You will be on
a mini-team with at least 2 main teachers, plus your
reading teacher. You will also be assigned to Exploratory Arts
teachers.
Is there still a snack?
Yes, we try to
have 2 small snack breaks-one in the morning and one in the
afternoon.
Is
there a recess?
You will have
1 recess at lunchtime.
How much homework will I have?
Homework is
assigned on a daily basis. You will be given an Agenda
to keep track of your assignments. You will be required to share
your Agenda with your parent each night. Homework is expected to
be done neatly and handed in on time.
What supplies
will I need?
You will be
receiving a letter from your homeroom teacher
telling you what supplies you will need.
Do I need to bring them the first day of school?
Absolutely:-)
What are my Exploratory classes?
During the
school year, you will be in art, music, tech ed, gym, and foreign
language.
Are there after-school
programs?
Yes, and they
will be announced as they become available to students.
Is there after-school help offered?
Each 5th grade
teacher hosts an after-school 1 night of the week. It is often on
a volunteer basis but also can be requested by your teacher to
your parent if your performance is in need of improvement.
What books will I
be reading in 5th grade?
The books read
by our 5th graders depend upon the reading group placements. Some
of the novels across the reading groups have been Tuck
Everlasting, War With Grandpa, Hatchet, Weasel, Gregor the
Overlander,Sign of the Beaver, and The Wish Giver.
In addition to these books, we will also be sharing our
summer-reads during our first month back to school.
